Who Was Josiah? The Young King Who Rediscovered God’s Law

Josiah became king of Judah when he was only eight years old. His reign came during the final decades of the kingdom of Judah, after generations marked by idolatry, political instability, and repeated warnings from God’s prophets.

A Young King Who Sought God

Second Kings and Second Chronicles describe Josiah as a king who did what was right in the sight of the Lord. Chronicles says that while still young he began seeking the God of David and later began removing idolatrous worship from the land.

The Book of the Law Was Found

During repairs to the Temple, Hilkiah the high priest reported finding the Book of the Law. When its words were read to Josiah, the king tore his clothes in grief because he recognized how far the nation had departed from God’s commands.

Josiah Responded With Action

Josiah gathered the people, publicly read the covenant text, and committed himself to following the Lord. His reforms included removing objects and practices associated with idolatrous worship and restoring proper worship.

A Remarkable Passover

The biblical accounts emphasize the Passover celebrated during Josiah’s reign. Second Kings says such a Passover had not been observed in this manner during the days of the judges or the kings who preceded him.

Reform Did Not Erase Every Consequence

Josiah’s faithfulness did not mean Judah escaped all consequences of generations of rebellion. The biblical narrative continues moving toward Jerusalem’s eventual fall and the Babylonian exile.

Josiah’s Legacy

Josiah demonstrates the power of taking God’s Word seriously when it confronts comfortable assumptions. His first response to hearing the neglected Law was not to explain it away but to humble himself and act.

His story also carries a sobering lesson: genuine reform matters even when we cannot control every consequence inherited from the past. Faithfulness is still faithfulness.
